After watching hours of HGTV and going down a home renovation rabbit hole on Instagram, it may be tempting to try the DIY route for your home remodel buuuuut (pause) it might be better to leave some things to the pros. Some mistakes can end up costing you way more than you saved by doing it yourself. But we don’t want to crush your DIY heart so we put together a little guide on when to do it yourself and when to hire a professional.

Reasons to DIY

Save Money

For simple things like painting or adding new handles in your kitchen and bathroom can really elevate a space without needing to hire a professional or spend too much money. If you are trying to save up for a bigger project, you can do a few home projects and make small changes.

It’s Your Hobby

There is a reason you love these HGTV shows, because home projects are fun. Things like working in the garden or painting the garage as a family on the weekend can be a great way to spend quality time and improve the look of your home. There are so many videos and resources available to teach you how to build out storage spaces or hack IKEA furniture. Home projects are fun, just don’t go knocking down any walls.

Reasons to Hire a Professional

Anything That Involves Water

Whether it’s plumbing or waterproofing, you do not want to be messing around with water. The water running through our house’s pipes are used every single day by every single person in the house. It’s important to hire a professional to install any water systems or fixtures in your home. And water damage is the worst—you will definitely want to hire a professional to make sure that all necessary interior and exterior walls are waterproofed properly.

You Intend to Sell

When going to sell your house, potential buyers will be looking at every single detail in your home. You may feel confident doing small tasks like painting or cabinet installation yourself but the benefit of hiring a professional will be reflected when showing your home. The person you hire will be trained, experienced, and know what to do to maximize the value of their work.

It’s Required by Law

Many projects that involve major structural changes will require you to not only hire professionals for the planning and design but also to build the project. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out exactly who you need to hire but we are here to help. Our team will take care of planning your project and matching you with talented professionals. If you are thinking about remodeling your home and not sure who you need to hire, we’re here to help. Check out our project packages or schedule a call with us.
